Model-based reports differ from empirical interpretations of measurement theory in that they do not require that the relationships between measurement results be isomorphic or homomorphic to observable relationships between measured elements (Mari 2000). In fact, according to model-based counts, the relationships between measured objects do not need to be observable at all before being measured (Frigerio et al. 2010: 125). Instead, the most important normative requirement for model-based accounts is that values be mapped consistently to the parameters evaluated by the model. The consistency criterion can be considered as a combination of two sub-criteria: (i) consistency of the model assumptions with relevant basic theories or other substantive prerequisites on the quantity to be measured; and (ii) objectivity, i.e. the mutual consistency of measurement results across different instruments, environments and models[18] (Frigerio et al. 2010; Valley 2017a; Teller, 2018). The first sub-criterion is intended to ensure that the expected quantity is measured, while the second sub-criterion is to ensure that the measurement results can reasonably be attributed to the measurable object and not to an artifact of the meter, environment or model. Taken together, these two requirements ensure that the measurement results remain valid regardless of the specific assumptions involved in their production and, therefore, the contextual dependence of the measurement results does not compromise their general applicability. Since we live in the real world and not in a Platonic universe, we assume that all measurements contain an error. However, not all mistakes are created equal, and we can learn to live with random mistakes while doing everything we can to avoid systematic mistakes.
